Review Activity: Draw a Snork

Here is an activity that will help you review the information on transcribing DNA to mRNA and translating mRNA to an Amino Acid sequence.

Do this on a separate piece of paper. Make sure you do each step of the activity and check your work to make sure there are no errors.

Protein Synthesis

Here is some information on Protein Synthesis. Use the reading, videos, and information below to help you understand the following about protein synthesis. You will need to be able to do this for the next quiz.

  • Describe the steps and/or structures in the process where genes sequences are copied to produce proteins.
  • Predict the complementary strand of mRNA give a sequence of DNA
  • Describe the relationship between DNA, chromosomes, genes, amino acids, proteins, and traits.
  • Describe that the sequences of the bases (ATGC) in DNA specifies what protein to make.

Please vist and take notes for at least two of the sources below. Make sure that you are taking notes on all of what is being said and shown. Write down questions that you have to ask later.

1. Video: Transcription
2. Video: Protein Synthesis
3. Video: Protein Synthesis (Amoeba Sisters)
4. Diffen: Transcription vs Translation
5. PowerPoint: Protein Synthesis

Here is a pre-quiz that you need to take before the end of today. I will get your score, but it will not be entered into the grade book. You may take it twice.

Mitosis Vs. Meiosis

Today you will need to find information on the topics of Mitosis and Meiosis in order to fill in the table provided. This information is key in being able to compare and contrast Mitosis and Meiosis. We will review these things this week as we learn more about Meiosis.

Use the links below to help you fill in the information needed on the poster. Please read all of the information provided, as well as watch any videos.

1) Diffen: Mitosis vs Meiosis
2) PBS: Mitosis vs Meiosis
3) Beverly Biology: Mitosis vs Meiosis

*ONLY watch this video if you have done the test*

Alternative Tasks to the Test

You may not be able to take the test today, but these will help you become eligible for the test.

ONLY complete the tasks that you need to. If you did not pass the cell transport quiz, then please complete the cell transport task. Thanks!

Extension: Transport Across the Membrane

This Khan Academy activity has a lot of information about transport and it goes above and beyond the stuff we talk about in class (Hint: good place to start researching things for a 4.0 project).

Complete the pre-quiz activity and then start watching the videos after. Take notes on these videos.

Remind: How to set up Remind on your phone

You can set up Remind a few different ways:

You can use the app and get notifications from it. It is available on both iPhone and Android.

You can sign up using your phone number. Follow the link below that corresponds with your class hour to find the directions. You will need to text a specific phone number our class code to sign up. If you do not have service at the moment, write down the number and code for later. If this is your first time signing up with Remind, it will ask you to send your name in a text message to register you for the site.

The app is the best option for also communicating with me. The app will send me a message and I can respond right back to you. Your parents can also sign up for this app if they want to receive updates about the class as well.

Welcome Back to School!

Welcome back to school! I know that the first few days of school are hard to get back into but we have a lot to cover.

This website is where you can find videos, quizzes and other helpful things that we use in class. This is where you can find a link to my email, sign up for text message reminders, or even to check your grades on PowerSchool. I will update this blog almost every week with new information from the class. Keep an eye out for extra things that I post only to the blog. These extra videos or activities might help you with quizzes or tests.

If you have any questions about the class or just a question about Biology, please email me. I'm excited to be back and I am ready to help you learn about Biology.

-Mr. N
