Argumentative Writing Paper

Here are the directions for writing:
  1. There are two required texts for the reading, you will need to read each.
    1. Why Animal Rights: Written by PETA
    2. Monkey Business? PETA sues to give copyright to macaque who took selfie. By Associate Press
  2. Read each article through once.
  3. Read each article again finding key ideas.
  4. Read each article again to find words you do no recognize. Write these words on a sticky note and post them on the poster in front of the class.
  5. Using the "Building an Argument" page, write down a claim with three evidences that you can use from this article to support that position. You would write a claim for giving more rights to animals, and one for not giving more writes to animals. This way you can see the argument from both sides.
  6. Do this for both articles
  7. After you have two Building an Argument pages done, select one more source that you find interesting from this group of sources here: Text Set for Animal Rights
  8. Read through the article and find ways that it supports your claim.
  9. Write an introductory paragraph. The paragraph should include the following:
    1. Hook: Engage the reader; Make them want to continue reading.
    2. Tell A Story: Give the reader information about the topic.
    3. Claim and Reasoning: "I believe that animals should/should not have more rights because reason 1, reason 2, and reason 3.

  10. Write a five paragraph RD using the IDEAS section of the 6+1 rubric. Click here for the rubric.
